5 Tips for Buying on Craigslist

Whether you’re looking to furnish an extra room with some nice used pieces, pick up some materials just right for a do-it-yourself project you’re working on, or if you’re in the market for a good deal on slightly used technology like TVs, computers or even phones…

Craigslist is worth your time to check out.

And since bargaining or “haggling” is accepted and common on Craigslist, you’re virtually guaranteed to find a good deal.

In case you’ve ever thought of doing some shopping on Craigslist, but didn’t really know the ins and outs…

Today I’m sharing my Top 5 Tips for buying items on Craigslist.

(Watch out for my top tips for selling items on Craigslist coming soon.)

Craigslist Buying Tip #1) Read the Craigslist posts in your area daily.

Craigslist classified posts are arranged like any blog you’d read online. That means the most recent posts are at the top, and the older posts move down.

So if you’re in the market for something specific, or you’re just looking for a good deal on something cool, it’s worth taking the time to scan postings daily and early. Just be sure you’re logged on to the Craigslist page for your local area.

Craigslist Buying Tip #2) Use relevant keywords in your search.

Each specific word or phrase you use to search posts in Craigslist will give you different results. So be sure to try different variations of words and phrases to see all the results related to what you’re looking for. And be sure to search with “images on” so you can easily see the items in those posts.

Craigslist Buying Tip #3) Browse the “Free” area for hidden gems.

While many think the Free area is just a pile of junk that people want out of their homes, some love the adventure of what they can find there.

The good items in the Free area can go quickly, usually to those who live the closest to the seller’s location, and have taken the time to browse through the Free area early in the day.

Craigslist Buying Tip #4) Don’t automatically go with the first item you find.

With more common items, it’s likely there are more than one of them being offered. So if you find something that looks interesting, keep searching to see if you can get it at a lower price, or from a location that’s closer to your home.

Craigslist Buying Tip #5) Bring a friend with you to the seller’s house.

Even though buying through Craigslist is usually as safe as buying from a local garage sale, many people feel more comfortable bringing a friend along.

And before you go to the seller’s location, always be sure you have their address and a time agreed upon for pickup, along with the seller’s phone number. You never know when there could be some kind of mix up, that leaves you waiting for hours with no one home.
