A Summer Job For Your Teenager?

I was 14 years old when I got my first job working at the Wahiawa Summer Fun program.

I was excited, and a bit nervous, to start working for the first time. But when that first pay check came in, it made me feel like a million bucks.

I immediately ran home and gave that check to my parents to help out.

Now, our kids will be out of school in a few weeks and into their summer break.

Here are 5 reasons why your teenager should get a summer job.

1) Learning the value of an honest day’s work. This valuable education will lay the foundation for their financial future.

2) Being Responsible. Working for a company or organization will teach them to show up on time, follow rules and procedures, and give their best effort.

3) Learn a new skill or trade. They need to learn how to do different things. And by trying different jobs, they will discover what professions they might be interested in, or area they might already have natural skills to do well.

4) Meet new people and develop much needed communication skills. In many jobs, they’ll have to learn how to communicate with adults and the public. In other jobs, they’ll learn how to interact in a positive way with their coworkers.

5) Earn money to pay for things they want. You’ve got to love this one! You’ll get them out of the habit of asking you for money, and used to working for what they want. Whether it’s a new phone or car, or a trip with their school or friends.
