How To Fix a Credit Report Mistake

“What should I do if I found a mistake on my credit report?

That is a great question to ask, because you know how important having good credit is. Not only does having good credit help us get the best interest rates on new loans, it also helps if we are looking to rent a home, as most landlords will pull your credit before offering you a lease.

These days more employers are looking over an applicant’s credit report, too, as part of the final hiring process.

Also, knowing how to fix any errors is one of the fastest way to increase your credit score.

Here’s what to do if you find an error on your credit report:

Report the error to the credit bureau, then report it directly to the creditor. Ask them to remove the error in writing. Provide as much information as you possibly can and back up your claim with documentation.

How long will the process take?

Generally speaking, the credit bureaus have 30 days to research the error. Though they can request an additional 15 days if needed.

Then for the correction to show up on your credit report, it can take an additional month or two.

If you don’t see the correction on your credit report after two months, it would be a good idea to contact the creditor and the credit bureau to follow up.
