Saving on Summer Lemonade

There are not too many things more refreshing than a fresh glass of lemonade in the summer. So I set out to see if I could save money with my fresh home-made lemonade, versus buying lemonade from the grocery store.

So I got a 1.8 quart bottle of Simply Lemonade for $5.69 and a bottle of organic lemonade for $5.59.

Then I made my own batch of lemonade. The simple recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of freshly-squeezed lemons and 1 cup of water for the simple syrup. Then I add 3 to 4 cups of cold water and some ice.

After making the sugar syrup I added the cup of lemon juice along with the 4 cups of chilled water and ice… and BAM! We have some tasty lemonade.

The cost for my homemade lemonade was the 5 lemons at 79 cents each, for a total of $3.95. And I used about 25 cents worth of sugar. The water and ice were practically free.

So in the end I got just as much lemonade as the two name brands I bought at the supermarket. But I was able to save about a $1.50 making my own. And me and the kids had a great time doing it.
