Spring Cleaning Your Credit

In Part 2 of spring cleaning for your financial house, here are 5 steps to get your credit sparkling clean.

Step #1. Check your credit score.

I like to use either of these two websites.

CreditKarma.com which will give you a free score from TransUnion… Or CreditSesame.com that uses Experian.

Step #2. Get a copy of your credit report.

You can get a free report from each of the 3 major credit bureaus by going to AnnualCreditReport.com.

Step #3. Check for any personal information errors.

Take a good look at your personal information section for any mistakes. Things to look for are the correct spelling of your name, your social security number, address, employer and previous employers. The #1 thing here is to make sure this is you, and not someone else.

Step #4. Look for any discrepancies on your credit report.

For example, a credit card that does not belong to you, a collection action or any other negative information that should of been removed after 7 years.

Step #5. Dispute all errors and mistakes.

According to the FTC, to get errors and mistakes corrected, you should contact the credit reporting agency and the information provider. Each agency has procedures to handle this, which can be found on their website.
