Your Options For Choosing a Tax Preparer

Your Options For Choosing a Tax PreparerRight now, we all find ourselves in the dreaded tax season.
If you haven’t done your taxes yet, you’ll discover some of your options today.

First… I want you to understand that as taxpayers, we are legally responsible for what goes on our tax returns, even if we hired someone else to do it.

So here are some of your options:

1. The Free Option.

Either attempting to do it yourself, or using TurboTax or your Uncle Bob. Be very careful with this option, as you may overlook important deductions, or even make a serious mistake.

2. Storefront preparers like H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt or other local shops around the country.

3. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs)

4. Certified Financial Planners (CFPs)

5. Tax Attorneys.

6. IRS Enrolled Agent – This is someone who has earned the privilege of representing you by passing a written IRS exam or from IRS work experience.

Whatever option you choose, always ask for references and credentials. Also understand their fee structure before moving forward.

I suggest you interview three different preparers as a starting point.

Hope this helps you get started with your taxes this year.

Good luck!
